According to a recent Comparitech analysis, "123456," "admin," and "password" are the most popular passwords in 2025.

More than 2 billion actual account passwords that were disclosed on data breach forums in 2025 were compiled by Comparitech analysts for this investigation. We created a list of the most popular passwords using that information.

Guessing a password is as easy as ABC 123

A startling number of passwords are readily guessed ascending or descending numbers, which is a display of human laziness.

● Only numbers made up 25% of the top 1,000 passwords.

● The string of numbers "123" was present in 38.6% of cases. The descending numbers "321" made up another 2%.

● Similarly, the string of letters "abc" was present in 3.1%.

● A single character makes up a lot of popular passwords. "********" is ranked #35 while “111111” is the 18th most utilized.

Common Words and Phrases

These letters and numbers are frequently paired with equally weak words like "admin," "password," and "qwerty."

● The terms "pass" or "password" appeared in some form in 3.9% of the top 1,000 most popular passwords.

● A version of the term "admin" was present in 2.7%.

● The string "qwerty" was present in 1.6% of cases.

● The word "welcome" was present in 1%.

With around 70,000 occurrences and an additional 20,000 occurrences with the variant casing "Minecraft," the word "minecraft" is the 100th most frequent password in our data set. "123456," on the other hand, occurred 7.6 million times.

"India@123" stood out as a very popular but less generic password, ranking 53rd.

The majority of experts advise using at least 12 characters in a password. The likelihood that a password will be cracked is greatly decreased by lengthening it.

● Less than 12 characters made up 65.8% of the passwords we examined.

● Less than eight characters made up 6.9%.

● 3.2% employed at least 16 characters.

Just three numbers make up the ninth most popular password, "123," while only four make up the fifth, "1234."

Why does it matter?

Weak passwords are easily cracked by contemporary password-cracking software. Common passwords are simple to figure out. Brute-forcing short passwords is simple.

A strong password, on the other hand, is unlikely to be cracked. Strong passwords consist of a mix of capital and lowercase letters, digits, and symbols, and are at least 12 characters long. Modus Operandi

More than 2 billion account credentials were gathered by Craw Security's analysts from Telegram and other data leak forums. Researchers either asked the user uploading the data how old it was or linked the data with breach notices submitted by firms to get the most recent data possible. Only the information that we are quite certain was compromised in 2025 was included.

The data was cleaned to eliminate anomalies and anonymized to eliminate any personally identifiable information.

Based on how frequently each password appeared in the final data set, we rated the most popular passwords.
